Carl Sundberg, Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Sundberg began his career in IT with Morgan Stanley where he worked for 11 years. During that time he was posted to Tokyo, New York and London and was promoted to Vice President. He then accepted an offer to become the IT Country Manager for Credit Suisse First Boston’s Japan subsidiary, serving as CIO and a director of the company with responsibility for over 120 IT professionals. In 2001, Mr. Sundberg accepted the position of Managing Director of a major CitiGroup subsidiary in Japan. There he also held the titles of COO and CTO, managing all aspects of technology systems for 2.5 million domestic customers, 800 branches, 6,000 employees and an annual budget of $120 million. He returned to Morgan Stanley in 2006 as an Executive Director of the firm, serving as both a director and CIO of a Morgan-backed financial services start-up business. Mr. Sundberg is an alumnus of the American School in Japan and Wesleyan University, with advanced studies at Stanford University. His outstanding reputation both inside and outside the world of IT and his many years of experience in managing complex systems and corporate organizations make him the ideal executive to lead Smart Technology Partners.

Henry Takata, Co-Founder/Chief Operating Officer

Prior to joining and co-founding STP, Henry was at Goldman Sachs for ten years until 2010, where he was Managing Director in charge of financial institutions coverage for financing buyouts, securitized assets and other credit transactions. Prior to Goldman, Henry was with Credit Suisse First Boston (currently Credit Suisse) for fifteen years mainly in derivatives. He is a Director of the Kizuna Foundation which is involved in economic revitalization in Tohoku. He is also a member of the US-Japan Council and serves on the Entrepreneurship Leadership Advisory Board.Henry earned a BS from Tufts University and MBA from the Anderson School of Management at UCLA, and currently resides in Tokyo.

Amalia Tanaka, Research and Development Director

Because of the nature of Smart Technology Partners’ activities, the role of Research & Development Director is particularly important. Ms. Tanaka brings to our team more than 16 years of professional experience in the finance and information technology businesses. After working several years as an economic researcher and portfolio analyst, in 1995 she moved to GMAC Commercial Mortgage Co. where she served as Systems Vice President, creating and implementing cutting edge IT systems and implementing IT policy in a wide region that included part of the US and all of Asia-Pacific. Her success there paved the way for a position as CIO and Senior VP of Technology for GMAC Commercial Mortgage in Japan and Asia. She quickly became a key player in the firm’s development of global standards and a leader in GMAC’s drive to use technology as an effective tool to boost competitive advantage. In 2002, she became CIO and Board Member for Capital Services Group, a Lehman Brothers Asia company.

Patricia Bader-Johnston

 Representative Director and CEO, Silverbirch Associates Ltd.Chief Development Officer, Katerva Professor, Kenichi Ohmae Graduate School of Business and Rikkyo University Faculty of Business Founder and Representative Director, 5ivePlanets (NPO) Patricia has held senior roles in a number of leading companies over a span of 25 years in Japan, including: Director of Communications for IBM Japan, Vice President Operations Finance and Resources, and Head of People Development for Goldman Sachs Japan, Head of Corporate and Regulatory Affairs, British American Tobacco Japan, and Head (Japan, Australia, Taiwan) of Corporate Affairs for Standard Chartered Bank. She served in the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo as a senior program officer in Communications and Culture, and spent three years in Japanese local government after arriving in Japan in 1984. She is an active speaker, writer, panel moderator and university lecturer on topics related to Innovation, Entrepreneurship,Sustainability, Communications, CSR, Globalization trends, and doing business in Japan.She has completed graduate work in Social Studies Education and holds an MBA in International Business from McGill University Canada.

Jon Shaw Kojaku

Prior to joining STP, Jon was at Sumitomo Life for 14 years where he was Assistant General Manager, Investment Planning and Deputy General Manager, International Business Department.  Jon was formerly an investment advisor and Managing Director of an Equitable subsidiary in Japan for eight years.  Jon began his career as an SEC attorney in New York City and Washington D.C.
Jon is a member of the California Bar Association and a board member of JACL, the oldest, largest Asian NPO in the United States.  JACL is currently supporting both economic revitalization and orphanages in Tohoku.  Jon earned his BA from Yale University and simultaneously received both an MBA from UCLA and a JD degree from USC.  Jon currently resides in Tokyo.
